OPENING PRAYER
Awesome Creator, Almighty God, Holy Spirit, we bow before You, having been gathered in congregation and fellowship on this Holy Day. We have prepared ourselves with open ears, hearts and souls to receive Your teaching from on high. Let us do so with earnest intentions to grow and apply that which You provided as spiritual nourishment for our very souls and the Holy Spirit that resides within, In JESUS, AMEN
MESSAGE
In your travels over the years, have you ever been greeted by a stranger that said something similar to the effect: "HI! I SAW YOU COME IN. YOU'RE NOT FROM AROUND HERE ARE YOU?" Or perhaps this situation; As you wait in-line for a booth at Cracker Barrel or Waffle House, another couple enters the line just behind you, and you detect a very prominent accent that would be consistent in coming from someone who works as a long shoreman on the JERSEY Shore! This is my question: Would you ever greet them with "YOU'RE NOT FROM AROUND HERE ARE YOU?"?
My Bride, Linda and I were staying at an RV park on the North side of Nashville, Tennessee years ago. It was my turn to do our laundry and I was attending to that task at the parks laun-dro-mat. There was an older couple doing their laundry who had been watching me closely as I folded this and hung that and got ready to head back to the coach. As I headed for the door, I overheard the man say to his wife; "Did you see that fellow folding his socks?"... I'll tell you, --"I don't think he is from around here!!" I guess, I stood out. [at least my socks did!]
In so many respects we who are believers in Christ really do stand out. We look like the rest of the herd but we act and think differently than those who are natives...those who are not simply traveling through from somewhere to somewhere else. We are the sojourners. "We are not from around here!"
The one we call Jesus was also not from around here. He was different; not blending in with the rest of the herd. ...He had no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There was no beauty that we should desire Him. {Isa 53:2 NKJV}
There was, however, something about him that was so compelling to many, but at the same time His presence brought conviction and fear to those who were natives of darkness, where evil resides. Visually, Jesus appeared simply as just another man. But His behavior was as one of subdued Authority. He was not someone one that stood out. Even though, folks somehow knew that HE WAS NOT FROM AROUND HERE!
The "spiritual being" that we now call JESUS has always been. He was with God at the start; When the Earth was formed; In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
(Joh 1:1-3 NKJV)
When you see the words THE ANGEL OF THE LORD in your Bible text, be assured that this is not your everyday basic angel. This moniker refers to the 2nd spiritual being in the triad of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. [Jesus, pre-incarnate]
It was THE ANGEL OF THE LORD that spoke to Moses from the burning bush; And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. (Exo 3:2-5 NKJV) This is the same Angel who told moses to remove his shoes because the spot where he stood was Holy!
About 40 years farther in the Old Testament, THE ANGEL OF THE LORD uttered an almost identical command about removing footwear as we read in (Jos 5:15 NKJV); Then the Commander of the LORD's army said to Joshua, "Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy." And Joshua did so. As we journey further through Holy scripture we repeatedly experience one epiphany after another; those wonderful moments when you realize that this fellow that you have just encountered IS NOT FROM AROUND HERE!
Born in the most humble of surroundings, our incarnate Lord Jesus, born of a virgin and of Holy seed, He was introduced to the world through a group of Shepherds, not some potentate or King. He grew up learning how to use his hands in labor creating through carpentry. As a teen, following his bar mitsvah he was discovered exchanging lofty theological truths with the highest of Rabbis in the Temple in Jerusalem. They found Him to be extraordinary in His grasp of ancient and complex theology. They knew that this young man was NOT FROM AROUND HERE!
When [Jesus] turned 30 years of age, He began His ministry and was baptized in the Jordan by His cousin John. {The Baptist} Even His own cousin did not know Him in His role of the Son of God. Eventually and before his death, John knew the truth and indicators of the mission of Messiah.
It was not too long before those who were allowing fraud and pagan worship in and around the Holy Temple that they began to be exposed. This created great fear that this Jesus and His preaching would quickly jeopardize a lucrative future for the priests and foreign idol worship within the walls of the Temple, and threaten the incestuous relationship with the Roman government. The Temple leadership realized that JESUS WAS NOT FROM AROUND HERE! and this needed to be fixed quick to prevent it from spreading through out Israel.
The leadership's plan was to compromise one or more of the followers of Jesus, in order to arrange to have Him killed for blasphemy, claiming to be the Son of God! They were successful, paid him a substantial amount of money and the man named Judas Escariot did their bidding! Jesus was arrested, scourged, beaten, shamed, and turned over to the Romans for execution by crucifixion.
According to Mat 26:59-67 the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.' " And the high priest arose and said to [Jesus], "Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?" But Jesus kept silent.
And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! What do you think?" They answered and said, "He is deserving of death." Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands. (Mat 26:59-67 NKJV)
Then Pilate said to them, "You take Him and judge Him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death," that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die. Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?"
Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."
Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, WHAT IS TRUTH??... (Joh 18:31-38 NKJV) Pilate turned and shook his head and perhaps muttered; HE IS CERTAINLY NOT FROM AROUND HERE!
This Holy Sojourner was taken away to Golgotha where he was nailed to the crucifixion cross. At His death, the earth trembled, the thick protecting vail hiding the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom exposing the Ark of the Lord and the Mercy Seat. Access to God now possible through Jesus!
Jesus was buried in a new tomb and was sealed. Sunday morning, the third day, Jesus ROSE FROM THE GRAVE ALIVE. The soldiers and witnesses all exclaimed; HE IS CERTAINLY NOT FROM AROUND HERE!
SUMMARY
Reading now from...1Co 15:12-26 the words of the Apostle Paul;...if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.
But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the first fruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. (1Co 15:12-26 NKJV)
Paul brings us now to this important charge by saying; I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen. (1Ti 6:13-16 NKJV)
